Humphreys Peak!!

We went on our backpacking adventure - We went north to Flagstaff and to hike Humphreys Peak - which is almost 13,000 feet up - above timberline (very hard to breathe up there). Just me and my Jim.. it was OVERWHELMING....

Wow... doesn't even come close to an explanation.

It was beautiful, it was hard, and it was memorable...

Was by far one of the hardest things I have ever done in my life!!!!!!

Friday we headed out at 10am on the trail and our packs were sooooooooo heavy.. Mine was almost 40 pounds and Jim's had to be over 50 pounds. We couldn't go very far before we had to stop to catch our breath and let our heart rates lower. They were beating out of our chest... if not from the weight, the incline and especially the altitude.

At almost 2 miles in - it started to rain - luckily we found a little shelter place (it was a Godsend!) and we parked it there for about 2 hours until the rain passed.

While waiting there we met up with another set of backpackers - a Guy (Jake) and his son (Michael - I think). He lived in Flagstaff and had hiked this mountain lots of time - he said he was going to camp up on the Saddle - off the Weatherford trail. He gave us some other good information and said he would owe us a cup of tea when we met up with them.

Once the rain let up we headed back up and into the woods...climbing some major elevation - it was at this point when I started counting our steps... which actually was a good distraction (Jim

We went up this hard part... some major switchbacks....Jim was spent... he kept saying... we've gotta be close... he was thinking once we got to the weatherford trail we would be able to camp....
Finally we reached the top - it was a hell of a hike... steep... we could only do about 10 steps and have to stop and breathe.....when we got to the top... there was no where to camp... Jim wasn't doing well, although I didn't know it then.. he told me later he was freaking out because he didn't think he could any more. We had to go about 20 minutes more and finally found a place to camp - right off the trail (which you're not suppose to do).

It was about 5:30-6:00 when we ate and then crashed - although sleep wasn't in the cards for me... I couldn't sleep - but it didn't matter - I was just happy I was in a vertical position without any weight bearing down on me- at around 10:30pm it started to rain, and continued for 2 hours. Then it let up and then started again around 1:30 and rained for another good two hours. .. luckily Jim was prepared and we didnt' get wet at all - the tent stayed dry and it was good.

We got up at 5am and ate breakfast - packed up and headed up- our goal was to summit the peak, which was about 5 miles from where we were.

We headed up – and Jim’s leg was hurting but he kept plugging along. We went about 25 minutes when we reached the saddle and ran into Jake and his son. We talked with them awhile and we debated on going any further. Jim would tell you that he was ready to quit.. but because I kept saying I'm willing to keep going.. he said he would keep going.

Jake had told us to be sure we were coming down from the peak by 1pm - because that is when the weather can get bad.... they left before us and we stashed our packs and headed for the mountain after them. It was nice to hike without the weight of the pack.. a much better experience.

We had to trek through a snow bank... it was crazy!!!! If we had slipped it would have been a long slide down... I'm just grateful we made across safely, both coming and going!

We made it to the saddle of humphreys peak fairly quickly.... we got there at about 11:20... we talked to a few people while we took a break - there were a lot of people there - they had come up the "day hike" way... from snowbowl it's 9 miles roundtrip from there. We talked with a lady whose husband went to the peak but she stayed back to wait - she'd summited this mountain lots of times... and wasn't up for it today. She said it would take about an hour to reach the peak. thought it was silly- he was just trying to breathe - he wasn't sure how I could even talk). The most steps we took was 135 - then we would stop and catch our breath and let our heart rate come back down. But mostly we were at about 70 steps and even at times (up steep inclines... only 10-15 (when we were coming down - this part seemed like it would NEVER end.. neither one of us could believe that we made it up - must've been a miracle)

Solar Eclipses

Joel 2:30-32And I will show signs and wonders in the heavens, and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke.
31The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes.
32And whoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered and saved, for in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as the Lord has said, and among the remnant [of survivors] shall be those whom the Lord calls.
These pictures were taken recently of the solar eclipse and it reminded me of this passage. I will let the Lord speak to you regarding it. Enjoy and know our God is an awesome God!!!
